A young couple purchased an un-modernised semi-detached Arts and Crafts-style home to create a new family home in a conservation area.
Keen on both the original features of the house and the textural quality of board-formed concrete, we envisioned a folding plane of concrete that wrapped up, down, and over to sculpt a new kitchen and living area.
We wanted a ‘broken-plan’ approach to the layout rather than either a voluminous open plan with no focus or a series of old-fashioned cellular rooms. By stepping the living area down from the kitchen and using shelving, we created no less than four separate living areas without the use of a single wall.
This exciting concept actually draws upon the traditions of Arts and Crafts to create a modern, hand-crafted extension that refers to the host structure whilst presenting an unapologetic of-its-time design.
