This apartment designed by Juliana Garcia Arquitetura is a renovation project located in the city of São Paulo. Among the client’s requested premises are the integration of the kitchen with the living room/TV area, the possibility of expanding the square footage of the social area, and its potential use for a home office. Phptography by Maíra Acayaba.
The organizing element of the integrated space is the wooden dining table in the center, which physically separates the functions of the kitchen and the living room/TV area. This table has network and power outlets to allow laptop connections for the home office.
On the white hydraulic tile wall, the kitchen functions with appliances such as a cooktop, oven, dishwasher, hood, and microwave are concentrated. The microwave is placed under the central white island that supports the wooden table.
On the wall where the green cabinet, white upper cabinet, and refrigerator under the yellow metal frame are located, the uses are intentionally undefined and clear, thus creating a random transition between the functions of the kitchen, office, and living room/TV area.
To expand the social area, as previously mentioned, the walls of the service area and toilet were pushed back, increasing the circulation space around the central table. This revealed the concrete beam and pillar, which remained exposed. These elements were used to reference the ceiling height of the corridor leading to the two suites – the only location, aside from the bathrooms, where a gypsum ceiling was installed.
A cube covered in wooden paneling serves as the transition from the social area to the private area, housing the wardrobe closet, toilet, and the concealed electrical panel underneath. Another client request was for a larger suite. As a result, two smaller suites were transformed into one larger suite with an integrated closet.
In this project, neutral tones were used for the finishes, such as exposed concrete, cement flooring and ceiling, white, and light-toned wood on the central table, kitchen cabinet, and panel. However, this sobriety is broken by the green and yellow accents near the central table. This is a project that maximized the possibilities of its original layout, aiming for spaciousness and optimization of functions.
