Line Apartment by MRA
Line Apartment is a project designed by MRA. Located in a highly preserved neighborhood in Jerusalem, facing the historic old city walls, the project entailed linking two small and separate residential units to create a single larger unit. The primary challenge was to reconcile multiple levels, open long views and vistas to the dramatic views and bring in light and air into all habitable spaces. Photography by Ilan Nahum.
Dupont Circle Residence by EL Studio PLLC
Dupont Circle Residence is a project designed by EL Studio PLLC. A renovation of a 3,900 SF, two-level apartment on Dupont Circle, the existing space was a lesson in the challenges of converting DC’s Commercial office inventory for residential use: low ceilings, imposing structure, insufficient building systems, and a footprint resultant from its position on the triangle between Massachusetts Avenue and P Street NW. The project was an exercise in “shrink-wrapping”: simplifying geometry with a curtain of elevated finishes. The unit shape is resolved by the communicating stair, which connects a double-height living space to the upper level. Photography by Anice Hoachlander.

Hilda Street House by United Studio

Rookery House by StudioSTL
Rookery House is a project designed by StudioSTL. Giant fir trees surround this spacious property on a gentle east-facing slope. Incorporating our client’s single-level living goals while still accommodating both master and guest suites created a strong circulation corridor on the property’s roadside. This corridor, clad in natural stone and punctured by deep-set windows, provides an acoustic and visual buffer from the road to the home’s primary spaces. The simple shed roof forms lift towards the property to maximize daylight and create a strong indoor-outdoor connection. With an elevated deck on the back of the house, the primary spaces have direct access to the outdoors. The interior finish palette includes fir accents and ceilings, natural wood floors, moody cabinetry, and concrete surround of the see-through fireplace. Photography by Josh Partee.
River of Life – Curl Curl NSW by Sandbox Studio®
Aptly named after the meaning of the indigenous name of its location, River of Life sits nestled into the established coastline of Curl Curl (derived from the name Curial Curial – i.e. ‘river of life’) and celebrates both an open and connected modern liveability. Surrounded by traditional residential forms, the focus for Sandbox Studio® was to create a relaxed yet elevated sanctuary that was sensitive to the natural setting, while also having its own character. The reference to the double-gable silhouette pays homage to the existing context, reinterpreting the use of timber weatherboard panelling vertically instead of horizontally. The result emphasises the height and scale of the home, and together with a neutral and muted colour palette both internally and externally, an overall lightness elicits calm.
