Casanova Apartment in Barcelona by Serboli Bureau

The apartment designed by Serboli Bureauis situated in the heart of Barcelona’s Old Esquerra de l’Eixample neighborhood, within a mid-20th-century building. The original four-room layout has been completely reimagined to open up the spaces and bring in more natural light, transforming what was once a dimly lit interior. Photography by Gerard Colomé.

The design is characterized by two distinct volumes: The first, larger volume features a lower ceiling and rough-textured paint, creating an open-plan space that connects the kitchen with the living area while discreetly concealing the bedroom.

The second volume, clad in walnut wood, organizes the entrance area and conceals the bathroom, adding warmth and sophistication to the design. Throughout the more public areas, the project employs neutral, delicate materials and tones. However, the bedroom and bathroom interiors reveal bolder colors, lending a playful touch to these more private spaces.

In these areas, color is used in a radical and cohesive manner, with elements such as radiators, window frames, lacquered furniture, and switches all harmoniously integrated to create a unified block of color. The palette balances dualities, with lighter, neutral tones in the public spaces—varying shades of white and textured paint for the walls, wood for the flooring and furniture, and sandy-hued stone for countertops.
In contrast, the private areas feature a pale pink for the bedroom, complemented by darker accents, while the bathroom is defined by a desaturated dark green, paired with matching details and brushed stainless steel elements for added contrast.
